Google has finally addressed the alien invasions on its homepage.
A few weeks back Google featured a drawing on its homepage that showed a UFO abducting the second O in the Google logo. An official tweet cleared up the confusion as to what the Google Doodle was referencing (Zero Wing, apparently) but several more UFO Doodles have appeared since. Sure, there was always an encoded tweet on hand to help decipher the special occasion, but today Google has officially acknowledged the UFOs on its blog, rather than just tweeting it.
Late last night Google revealed that the series of drawings were a nod to H.G. Wells, the author of The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. Wells would have turned 143 years old over the weekend and Google"s Michael Lopez said they wanted to celebrate the authors life and have a little fun at the same time.
"Inspiration for innovation in technology and design can come from lots of places; we wanted to celebrate H.G. Wells as an author who encouraged fantastical thinking about what is possible, on this planet and beyond. And maybe have some fun while we were doing it."
Lopez goes on to say that this marks the end of an invasion by alien crafts but encourages everyone to read Wells" The War of the Worlds.
